The Evers Society

The Carl G. Evers, M.D. Society was established as an honorary and service organization. It is composed of medical students from all four years, each elected by the members of his or her class. The organization seeks to improve medical education at UMMC primarily through the evaluation of course work required in the preclinical and clinical years of medical school. We author, distribute, and collect evaluations for each course, maintaining strict anonymity and confidentiality of all materials. Evaluation reports are prepared by society members and presented to the course coordinators and department chairs. The reports give a summary of the strengths and weaknesses found in the evaluations along with a summary of comments made about the course and its professors. It is our hope that these reports will be used to strengthen and improve our curriculum for the benefit of all students and faculty.

Dr. Carl G. Evers

Dr. Carl G. Evers who served first as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs from 1973-1978, then Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1978 until his death in 1992 at age 58. Dr. Evers was a native of Lake Benton, Minnesota. He completed his undergraduate education at Mankato State College and his medical education at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Once he made his way to Mississippi to pursue residency training in pathology, he never left. He married a nurse, Jan Magee Evers from Tylertown, Mississippi. Carl and Jan have three children Karen, Julie and Gus-all of whom live in Jackson.

Dr. Evers was well-known and well-respected for his work in medical education within the state and nationally. He was elected to the Mississippi State Medical Association Board of Trustees, Speaker of the House of Delegates and President of MSMA. He was elected by the American Medical Association to the Council on Medical Education in 1991.

He was described by Dr. Norman Nelson a previous Vice Chancellor and Dean of the School of Medicine in this way---He was a superb physician, an exceptional teacher and a nationally known medical educator. As assistant dean then associate dean for academic affairs, he worked closely with every one of our classes, giving students counsel on course work, advice on specialty selection and being the kind of faculty friend upon whom the students could depend.

Primary Care Day

Primary Care Day (PCD) is hosted each year by the M2 Evers' Society members for the M1 class to promote interest in primary care specialties. PCD is normally held a few weeks into the spring semester. The day starts off with breakfast and is followed by an introduction to each specialty by a faculty member. The primary care specialties are Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Ob-Gyn, Emergency Medicine, and Med/Peds. After the introduction, students move to the Classroom Wing where each specialty has a station set up for students to rotate through. In the past, these stations have included suture workshops, intubation dummies, surgical knot-tying, echocardiogram demonstrations, ultrasound demonstrations, dermatology presentations and more. The conclusion of PCD is a catered lunch after the rotations and is accompanied by a closing speaker and drawings for great door prizes. Door prizes have ranged from medical textbooks to gift cards from local restaurants to an entire honey-glazed ham.

PCD is a great event that allows first year medical students fun, hands-on exposure to medical specialties that they might not have had previously while allowing them to interact with doctors that will play integral roles in their medical education in the third and fourth years of medical school.
